Vordel and Software AG win Spanish eGovernment Services Oriented Architecture security contract for inter-departmental and government-to-citizen services

Spanish Social Security deploys Vordel's SOA security and management solution

Dublin, Ireland and Madrid, Spain April 26, 2006 - Vordel, the XML Web Services security company and Software AG, leader in services and solutions to deliver a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) IT infrastructure, today announced that the VordelDirector product is being used to manage and secure Web Services for the Spanish Government's Social Security IT Administration (GISS). Vordel was selected by GISS to manage and secure Web Services for inter-departmental and citizen use.

VordelDirector enables GISS to secure the delivery of reusable services built on top of existing mainframe systems in the Services Oriented Architecture (SOA). VordelDirector "unlocks" data in these mainframe systems in a safe manner, by providing access control and auditing. In this way, the SOA solution, enabled by VordelDirector, has strengthened intergovernmental interoperability by exposing services across government departments in a secure and efficient manner.

A recent survey by analyst firm IDC revealed that 12% of SOA deployments in Europe were in the Central and Local Government sector. Rob Hailstone, Director of European Software Infrastructure research at IDC, identified the need to reuse and reduce the cost of integration as an important driver for the adoption of SOAs.

"Within an SOA new complexities emerge due to the number of combinations of services; messages; composite applications; processes; security zones; audit requirements; service level agreements and other management parameters that need to be considered. Without an appropriate SOA Security and management solution, the investment in an SOA can be made redundant" signaled Hailstone.

Eladio Quintanilla, Manager of Information Systems at the Spanish Social Security, affirmed: "Vordel delivered a high performance, highly scalable solution that has enabled GISS secure and manage the efficient delivery of our eGovernment services. They complemented our Software AG Web Services environment by providing the requisite levels of security for external and internal usage of these key services."

Roberto Armiño, General Manager at Software AG Spain responsible for the SOA infrastructure at the Social Security and distributor of Vordel in Spain indicated,

"Our ability to increase profits on the investment already made in the mainframe has been of vital importance for the objectives of the GISS. Vordel provided the ideal complementary security environment for the delivery of these Web Services, exposed by Software AG."

Vordel CEO, Vic Morris, commenting on this announcement said, "This latest customer win is further evidence of Vordel's preeminent position in the XML security industry. Clearly Governments cannot afford to compromise on the major issues of security and management, whether delivering services on an inter-departmental basis, or externally to citizens and commercial institutions."

"With VordelDirector, the GISS have been able to optimize the delivery of services whilst generating cost savings through the reuse and interoperability of their IT capabilities", concluded Morris.

The security and management solution provided by VordelDirector is standards-based, using security standards such as SAML in order to interface with GISS's authorization system. Graphical reporting interfaces show XML network activity, response times, and security events.
